world noir

My current book project, entitled World Noir, focuses on crime fiction from outside the Anglo-American tradition, with a particular emphasis on narratives from South Asia, Africa, and Latin America. More specifically, I will be exploring the various changes this 'travelling' genre undergoes as it moves from place to place – responding to the sociocultural specificities of each new setting, and to the different forms of crime and criminality to be found in cities such as Mumbai, Nairobi, and Ciudad Juárez. Over the course of the study, I shall be discussing a diverse range of narratives, including Vikram Chandra's Sacred Games, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o's Petals of Blood, and Roberto Bolaño's 2666.
